When Is Rewiring A Property Necessary?
Rewiring a property can be major project. However, it may be essential because of the safety hazards due to damaged or deteriorating wiring. Wear and tear can vary depending on type of materials and historical usage.
If a property is more than 25-30 years old and has the original wiring, it is likely to need upgrading (at least in part) to meet current standards, which will include replacing the fuse board with a regulation consumer unit.
Old and faulty wiring can cause the entire electrical system to trip frequently, blow fuses, or at worst, spark a potentially life threatening fire or electric shock. If you have an older home and it has not been inspected for a number of years, you may have issues like:
- Frequent flickering or dimming lights
- Damaged or exposed wires and cables
- Old cable colors or aluminum wiring
- Cables not including an earth conductor
Out Of Date Fuse Boards
Why Do I Need A Fuse Board Replacement ?
Although your older fuse board (assumed to be rewardable fuses) might continue to supply your electrical needs, the form of protection would probably be a minimal 5amp fuse wire which, until it overloaded and burned out, would continue to supply a fault-state current which can kill. The latest fuse boards/consumer units contain RCD protection devices which trip the supply on a detected earth fault at 30m/Amps in milli-seconds (0.4s), thus reducing as much as possible the chance of fatal shock.
